Description
Description:
Since the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in 2017, employees have been unable to claim itemized deductions for home office expenses. This suspension applies to all miscellaneous itemized deductions for tax years 2018 through 2025, with eligibility scheduled to return in 2026.
Self-employed individuals, however, remain eligible to deduct office-related expenses on Schedule C of Form 1040. These deductions may include common business necessities such as supplies, postage, computers, printers, and other ordinary and necessary costs for operating a home office.
In addition, the home office deduction may extend to a portion of housing-related expenses, such as mortgage interest, rent, utilities, insurance, repairs, and depreciation, when tied to business use of the home.
This course explores the key rules and considerations surrounding home office deductions, helping self-employed professionals understand what qualifies, how to maximize deductions, and how to remain compliant with IRS requirements.
